All-District Parent Meeting Regarding the High School Renovation

7pm, Monday, May 4, 2015
“Black Box” Theatre in the Performing Arts Center
Ladue Horton Watkins High School

The details…

The district has been researching the possibilities of a high school renovation for well over a year. This building was identified in the district’s Facilities Master Plan approved by the Board of Education in 2011 as the property most in need of significant renovation. The core academic areas of the building have not been structurally renovated since they were originally built in the 50s and 60s and are not designed for the interdisciplinary, collaborative, experiential learning we know will be so important to students being successful in today’s post-secondary educational institutions and in their careers.

While we have historically been consistently ranked as one of the best public school districts in the area, state, and even the nation, we are reaching a point where our high school’s physical structure is impeding our ability to deliver today’s instructional best practices. Having done a great deal of research, we are now engaging our various communities in discussions regarding what they would value most in a newly renovated high school and we have preliminary concepts to share.

Please keep in mind, the earliest the district would move forward with putting a bond referendum on the ballot would be April 2016. Therefore, today’s fifth-graders would be the first freshmen in a fully renovated facility.

Please encourage your parent communities to attend one of these meetings which will begin with a presentation by Superintendent Dr. Donna Jahnke regarding the research that has been done to date on this project. The presentation will be followed by a tour of the current facilities, with photographs of how our current facility compares with other public school districts in our area. As many who have already toured the building have told us, “Seeing is believing.”

In addition, the district will be hosting another Community Forum at 7pm on Monday, May 11 , 2015, in the high school cafeteria.
